I chose to give the static characters a prominent sense of personality, and life. I dug deeper than their superficial purposes, and extracted wisdom from them.
Jared’s mother, and Catherine’s mother are what I would call “living stationary people”, because they serve a meaning and a purpose for the upbringing of the two – but they also look back in hindsight and explain what it has been like to battle with problems, alongst taking care of their kids.
Essentially, they give parenting advice and wisdom that is reflected upon in the present time, that you wouldn’t usually read in other books. Besides that, we get an insight to their reasonings, regrets, and hopes in the future that also involves their kids.
They also discuss mental health and its effect on human functioning, and how it initially affected their kids.
What I can expect from parenting is that your past experiences, which have formed your intuition, wisdom, patience (or lack), all influence the way of teaching and raising a kid, and the kid will feed off of that. The parent can choose to change their course of personal development, if just they decide to. Likewise, a kid can choose to counteract what they have observed about their parents, and become the opposite.
This influences their perception of their kids, and who they are as beings. But one of the main messages of my book is that nothing is as it seems, so communication is the key.
It is another way to make the reader understand the main character more, and where he is coming from – literally, and morally. Instead of having them to share what they want to share, we get a rough mix of truth from different sides.
All of this gives them life and embodiment, but it all – despite the deep subjective reflection upon a long timespan of their life – always returns back to being about either Catherine or Jared.
